The Artwork

Picture
Having trained and performed in Opera and Lieder, as well as in the Hebrew and Yiddish art song, Ava Lee strongly believes that her "visual voice" is embodied and embedded within her paintings. Over the last decade and a half ... or so, her voice in particular, and her musicianship in general, have undergone a transposition into the visual artistic forum. Ava Lee is convinced that her intense and disciplined music background bears greatly on her technique as a visual artist. She creates in watercolour, acrylic, pastel, encaustic, and mixed-media; these works are often enhanced with gold, silver, and/or bronze illumination. She feels that it is within these milieux that she is best able to express the ebb and flow of music. Visual art allows Ava Lee the opportunity to explore and interpret the blending and melding of harmonies, the major and minor keys, the interweaving of vocal and instrumental lines, the high and low ranges from soprano to basso-profundo ... and every range and colour in between.

More often than not, as she creates, this artist gleans great inspiration from classical music, or from the enormous and varied repertoire of Hebrew and Yiddish music. Ava Lee relates to her paintings in musical terminology ... a little less legato here,  a bit more forte there.  Most paintings are entitled with words that embrace musical imagery and/or terminology; these titles reveal themselves during a stage in the creative process wherin Ava Lee is able to "hear" the evolving timbre and tonality. Images of Ava Lee's original works can be seen on the covers of various publications.

It is the physiological gift of synaesthesia that allows Ava Lee to "hear" colour and to "see" sound. Kandinsky seems to have best summed up this phenomenon when he wrote, " Colours are the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies,  the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul."
